We wish to thank the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, also known as R.K.D., for their kind assistance in authenticating and cataloguing the present lot.Provenance:Sold: Hôtel Drouot, Paris, Étude Eric Courturier & Étude de Provence, March 25, 2002, Lot 19Richard Green Gallery, LondonAcquired directly from the abovePrivate Collection, FloridaLot note:Leickert was well-established by the time Skaters on a Frozen River, 1872, was painted and at the height of his powers as a premier landscapist who specialized in winter scenes and excelled in capturing the effects of light. A leading member of the Dutch Romantic School, the artist spent most of his career in Holland, and was likely in Amsterdam when the present work was painted. He enjoyed great success during his lifetime, with patrons enjoying his highly naturalistic scenes of skaters on frozen rivers, a subject he mastered and which reveals the strong influence of his teacher of an earlier generation, Andreas Schelfhout.
